Bulgarian Shopska Salad has earned a place among the 24 best salads in the world according to a new ranking published by CNN, BGNES reports. The fresh and colorful dish, beloved throughout Southeast Europe, took its rightful place alongside award-winning classics such as the Greek Horiatiki, the French Niçoise Salad and the Mexican Caesar Salad.
The media outlet described Shopska salad as "Bulgaria’s most famous salad", known for its combination of "chopped ripe tomatoes, roasted peppers (usually green bell but sometimes red), cucumber (English or Persian), hot peppers (optional), onions (usually red), along with parsley and crumbly Sirene cheese (similar to feta)".
The article reads that the red, green and white in the salad represent the colors of the Bulgarian flag, making it not only a refreshing dish, but also a symbol of national pride.
